Melanotan I is a linear analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) that binds selectively to the MC1 receptor. Research focuses on stimulating eumelanin synthesis in the skin and on photoprotection in light-sensitivity disorders. Unlike the cyclic MC3R/MC4R-active analogues, its selectivity for MC1R means melanogenesis research is not confounded by central melanocortin effects.
